Saturday Science Presents: You Can Do Science

Education
We will make non-Newtonian fluids, stomp rockets, and aerodynamic airplanes to learn about fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, and air pressure. We will look at sunspots on our sun and decorate planets while learning about space.

Ron Pagano Maker Picture

Ron Pagano

Ron is a first year graduate student studying physics at LSU. He decided to study physics after learning just how puzzling the theory of quantum mechanics is. He is interested in condensed mater physics, quantum physics, and teaching others just how strange and exciting physics can be.

Melissa Foley Maker Picture

Melissa Foley

My name is Melissa Foley and I am a first-year Physics Ph.D. student at LSU. I am interested in theoretical condensed matter physics. I enjoy physics outreach and hanging out with my small dog.

Kevin Becker Maker Picture

Kevin Becker

I’m a first-year PhD student at LSU’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. I’m interested in a lot of things, but I really like theoretical particle and nuclear physics. I’m working with Professor Kristina Launey, using group theoretical techniques and high-powered computer simulations to probe the internal structure of atomic nuclei.

Alex Igl Maker Picture

Alex Igl

Alex Igl is a second year graduate student in the LSU Department of Physics and Astronomy. He hails from Jamestown, North Dakota, and got his undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. He is currently doing his research on binary star systems (two stars rotating around each other).

Will Braverman Maker Picture

Will Braverman

I am a first year PhD student at LSU’s department of Physics and Astronomy. I have a bunch of interests, but I am looking to focus on experimental nuclear astrophysics. I will slowly start to engage with the experimental nuclear physics group here at LSU in the next couple of years, possible studying the cosmological lithium problem.

What inspired you to make this project?
A group of graduate students have been organizing "Saturday Science" talks for several years now, however this is the first year we have collaborated with EBRPL, using the library space for the presentations. The staff at the library suggested that we consider creating a project for the mini makers fair. We thought this was a way to promote the talks we organize and hopefully get more kids interested in science.
