San Francisco instrument inventor Bryan Day has been crafting sound machines from found objects since the 1990s. For this presentation, he will guide visitors through the process of building sound sculptures, demo-ing his creations along the way.
Bryan Day is a sound artist, musical instrument inventor, and conceptual artist based in San Francisco. Using scavenged electronics, repurposed mechanical components, and amplified materials, he re-imagines them into constructivist sound sculptures. Since the late-1990s, he has built over a hundred sound object devices, from amplified measuring tape, hacked radio transceivers to electromechanical installations using magnets, hard drives and pendulums. His recorded work ranges from noisy electroacoustic improvisation to drony minimalism and audio collage, which is showcased in his projects Euphotic, Collision Stories and Seeded Plain. Day has performed, taught workshops, and built sound installations across Europe, Asia and the Americas. During his days, he can be found designing, building, and repairing science museum exhibits at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
